While a sophomore in college, Kevin D. Johnson founded a software development and internet consulting company. Soon after, he partnered with Farai Mtetwa, a good friend and computer whiz. Together they created OmniPublisher, one of the first online content management applications. (Think WordPress ten years ago.) Since then, the company has broadened its vision to include marketing and media. Likewise, the company has expanded its team to include industry trailblazers whose amazing confluence of ideas allows them to make Johnson Media one of the best and brightest firms.

Kevin D. Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Media, has over ten years of experience leading his company as a successful marketing and communications company that serves many of the most notable FORTUNE 100 businesses today. As an innovative leader, he has appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America”, CBS, Oprah Radio, and in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Moreover, he is a regular guest on CNN.

Before founding his company in 2000, he engineered web applications and produced computer software for leading companies. He was a software programmer for IBM and a webmaster for CNN Interactive. Also, he worked for Arthur Andersen Worldwide as a business consultant and lead software developer.

Hailing from Boston, Kevin attended Morehouse College in Atlanta where he studied computer science as a NASA scholar and Spanish, graduating with honors. While in college, he started Johnson Media which created one of the first online content management tools for local newspapers called OmniPublisher. He later sold it to a publishing company. Realizing the tremendous opportunity in applying internet technologies to media and marketing, he decided to focus his business on this growing market. Currently, his goal is to grow Johnson Media into an international media conglomerate and marketing company, further enabling him to support altruistic causes dear to his heart.

Kevin is and has been involved in various nonprofits. Most recently, he was the Director of Economic Gardening for Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), one of the nation’s largest nonprofit trade organizations for technology. In this role, he was responsible for leading an innovative approach to economic development that focused on providing resources to high-tech businesses located in Georgia’s coastal region. Furthermore, he enjoys doing community service as a volunteer for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, Economic Empowerment Initiative, Latin American Association, and Boys & Girls Club of America.

In his spare time, Kevin enjoys listening to salsa and jazz, playing piano in his Latin band, reading, golfing, traveling, and training for marathons. He is a member of the Apex Society and a former board member of the Atlanta Business League (ABL). He is also a member of the 2008 L.E.A.D. Atlanta Class of Leadership Atlanta.

Vice President of Sales & Marketing
John Breton

John Breton brings a wealth of marketing and sales experience to Johnson Media where he serves as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. His sole responsibility is planning, organizing, staffing, training, and managing all marketing and sales efforts to achieve the company objectives of growth, profitability, and visibility.

Prior to joining the team, he worked at large companies such as Cox Media Group, Clear Channel Broadcasting, Gannett Broadcasting, and International Business Publishers, achieving outstanding sales success. In addition to his corporate knowhow, he often draws on wisdom learned from working in his family’s business.

With extensive experience in publishing, television, radio and internet advertising, John is well versed in the marketing and media field. Most recently, he has focused on serving client’s web optimization and online marketing needs. He has worked with major clients, including Harley-Davidson, Mercedes Benz, Pfizer, Kroger, AirTran, Bank of America, State Farm, and BASF.

John is a native of Massachusetts but has spent most of his life in Atlanta and Virginia. He attended college at Oglethorpe University, obtaining a degree in Business Administration. He later received his Master of Business Administration from the same institution.

Community service is a high priority for John. Currently, he serves on various board positions with Oglethorpe University and volunteers at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Make-A-Wish Foundation, American Red Cross, March of Dimes, and Autism Speaks.

Finally, John is a devoted husband and father, and when not working hard, loves to play tennis.

Director of Business and Legal Affairs
Chelsey Rodgers

Chelsey Rodgers, Esq. started with Johnson Media in 2004 as editor-in-chief of A.U.C. Magazine and has since then combined her experiences in journalism, marketing, public relations and the legal profession to serve as Johnson Media’s Director of Business & Legal Affairs.

In 2010, she launched a solo law practice. Prior to that, she was an associate at McKee Nelson LLP in its New York office and an assistant marketing manager at L’Oreal USA. She has also served as a freelance writer for several publications and has been published in two anthologies.

Chelsey, a native of Macon, Georgia, received her Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law where she served as editor-in-chief of The Barrister newspaper. She was a Howard Law Merit Fellow and was awarded the CALI Academic Achievement Award in Legal Writing. She graduated from Spelman College summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. While at Spelman, she was named a JPMorganChase Bachelor Fellow and a U.S. Achievement Academy Collegiate All-American Scholar.

Chelsey dedicates much of her time to helping strengthen her community. Her most recent endeavors have led her to volunteer with Hearts 4 Haiti, Best Buddies, Macy’s Shop for a Cause Foundation, and the Washington Post Music and Dance Scholarship Awards. Furthermore, Chelsey serves as an inspirational speaker and visits community centers, juvenile detention centers, and middle and high schools to discuss building self-esteem. Her passion for building healthy self-esteem led her to create the Miss Congeniality Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes healthy self-esteem through workshops that teach 12 to 16-year-old girls confidence building skills learned in pageants. Chelsey is also a member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Group, which advises juvenile agencies and ensures adequate juvenile delinquency prevention programs that meet the needs of youth.

In her spare time, Chelsey enjoys traveling, singing, and volunteering with pageants. She is a former Miss District of Columbia USA® 2008 and represented the District at the 2008 Miss USA Pageant® in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chelsey also runs a pageant and lifestyle consulting company, Brains & Beauties. She lives with her two Yorkshire terriers, Trixie and Bailey.

Senior Account Executive
Towanna Hogue

Towanna Hogue is a Senior Account Executive with Johnson Media and is responsible for achieving sales and profitability objectives. She identifies marketplace opportunities, prospects and engages new clients, develops proposals, and manages the contract process.

Before joining Johnson Media, she worked for All Events Management Group, Gazette Newspaper of the Washington Post, and American Psychiatric Publishing Group.

In her various marketing and advertising roles, she created marketing campaigns and strategies, managed accounts and staff, planned events, delivered presentations, and developed customer relationships with companies nationwide. She also assisted in creating and proofing advertisements in print and online.

Towanna graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and a minor in Marketing. Currently, she is working to obtain a Master of Science degree in Business Management at Argosy University.

She was born in Kentucky, but lived in Maryland for 15 years. She moved to the Atlanta area four years ago.

Towanna strongly believes in giving back to the community and helping others in need. She is a volunteer for the Lupus Foundation, Atlanta Hunger Walk, Sickle Cell Foundation, Atlanta Food Bank, and American Cancer Society. She also strongly supports the Relay for Life event to honor cancer survivors such as her and to honor the memory of those who perished.

Towanna is family oriented and loves to keep her children active with academics and sports such as tennis, baseball, basketball and t-ball. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, watching movies, making dinner, and shopping.

Marketing Intern
Joshua Kushner

Joshua Kushner is a Marketing Intern with Johnson Media for the summer of 2010 and will assist in conducting market research, implementing marketing strategies, and creating media and press kits.

Most recently, he spent the previous summer in Boston working as a Sales Intern for Cleary Consultants. He also collected and interpreted consumer research information while assisting in the development of a social media marketing campaign for Qwobl.com.

Joshua hails from Fort Myers, Florida and is currently a senior in the Goizueta Business School of Emory University, majoring in marketing and economics. He also studied German at Universtät Wien in Vienna, Austria. Joshua will be graduating in May of 2011 and plans to obtain a marketing MBA in the future.

In his spare time, Joshua enjoys traveling, snowboarding, and volunteering at intercity schools in the greater Atlanta area through Emory READ. He has always enjoyed learning new musical instruments, and currently plays the drums and trombone.

Russell Griffin

Russell Griffin recently served as Director of eBusiness for a Fortune 500 Insurance company, where he had strategic and day-to-day operations responsibility for all eBusiness initiatives. He has also served with KeyCorp, Wachovia, and MetLife over the span of his career.

Prior to joining those companies, he was chief executive of Griffin MarCom Inc., the strategic marketing and communications firm he started in 2001, and through which he held the working title of Chief Marketing Officer for a number of dotcom and post-dotcom era startups. He also served as VP of Marketing and Corporate Communications for Edaflow Corporation, a B2B startup providing software and service to the apparel industry. Prior to that, served as officer, or director for market leading companies since the early 90's.

Russell received his Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication and Public Relations from State University of New York College at Buffalo. He is a past Board Member of the Electronic Banking Association, and past Adjunct Lecturer and Coach at SUNY Albany. Through his career, he has served as advisor to multiple Atlanta, GA area start-ups and mature companies. He served a 3-year term as Executive Director of MiTE (Minority Technology Entrepreneurs), a non-profit technology think-tank and launch-pad. Russell currently works with the State of Rhode Economic Development Corporation, through involvement with two business leaders' development associations.

He is a 2003 MOBE award winner - for Internet Innovation and Marketing, and has completed Executive coursework in Enterprenuerial Studies, through Babson College. He is also a graduate of the prestigious Harvard Business School Program for Leadership Development.

Board Member
Michael Q. Parker

Michael Q. Parker began his career as a packaged goods marketer at General Mills in Minneapolis where he worked on well-known brands such as Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn and Yoplait Yogurt. Following his tenure at General Mills, Parker marketed a variety of consumer products ranging from spices to floor care products, before making the transition to mass media.

In 1993, Michael joined Cox Enterprises as director of circulation sales and marketing for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In that role, he focused on growing both single copy sales and enhancing subscriber acquisition and retention using consumer goods marketing principles.

When Cox created a separate business unit to capitalize on the growing interactive media area, Michael was tapped as one of the founding directors. At Cox Interactive Media, Michael served as vice president of marketing, and group vice president with P&L responsibility for ten sites including its flagship, AccessAtlanta.com.

Michael was named vice president/Internet Strategy and Solutions for Cox Newspapers in August, 2000 and served in that role until July, 2005. During this time he was responsible for directing the development and implementation of Internet efforts for all Cox newspaper's and related properties.

Currently, Michael is VP, Global Digital Marketing and Operations for Laureate Education, where he is responsible for establishing, and leading the implementation of, an overall digital marketing strategy using various channels for a global network of private higher education institutions.

Michael is a board member of the National Association of Minority Media Executives. He and his wife Gail are the proud parents of two sons, Brandon and Jared.

The president signed an executive order authorizing renewed funds for colleges and scholarships. For over ten years, Johnson Media has worked with institutions of higher learning, helping them to attract and to develop world-class students.

  • CEO Kevin D. Johnson recently appeared on Oprah & Friends Radio to discuss how businesses and individuals can be successful during an economic crisis. During the half-hour segment, he was interviewed by host Jean Chatzky, author and financial editor for "The Today Show".

  • "Good Morning America" and The New York Times featured CEO Kevin D. Johnson and the company's successful, marketing campaign, "New Credit Rules", which has educated over 50 million consumers in three months about the importance of financial literacy. Both media outlets focused on the campaign's creative ability to present new and shocking information that has sparked tremendous, national interest.

  • Park N’ Fly, the leader in off-site airport parking, hired Johnson Media to create and to implement a plan to make its consumer website more flexible and to improve its search engine rankings.

  • Central Atlanta Progress is a private, not-for-profit corporation that strives to create a robust economic climate for Downtown Atlanta. The organization recently hired Johnson Media to produce a series of television PSAs to educate Atlanta visitors and residents about the services it offers.

  • Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center is the Southeast's leading provider of educational arts programming. The organization recently hired Johnson Media to produce a video segment that gives donors a better idea of how artist residency programs work.

  • Deidre Turner Johnson, producer of the television show, "The Romance Travel Guide", is featured in skirt! Magazine. In the article, Deidre talks about the show and some of the upcoming international destinations for the new season like Italy and Indonesia.

  • Johnson Media was featured in the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of the fastest growing companies in Atlanta.
